South Italy and most of its little villages, is an area so little known to the European tourism yet in a delightful land wealthy of natural beauties, such as the Arch of Arcomagno, a natural arch of rock, entrance to an attractive coved beach, with calm turquoise sea; the Faraglioni of Capri, beautiful sea rocks in the sea of Capri, one of many in the Amalfi Coast; or the Etna Volcano, still active and one of Sicily's biggest tourist attractions. History and architecture are also very important factors of southern Italy's culture and tourist attractions, like the temple ruins of Agrigento - Sicily; Capri offering one of Italy's most beautiful piazzas (town square) in the middle of town, Piazzetta, completely closed up, giving the impression of a courtyard, surrounded by many shops and cafes and the Torre dell'Orologio (Tower of Clock); or the over 40 mt. high statue of the Christ in Maratea situated on a hill over 300 mt. high offering a most breath-taking site over the port of Maratea. Another great piece of southern Italy history, from Calabria to be exact, is the Bronzi di Riace: two magnificent bronze, human-size, male statues, found in the gulf of Riace, now showing in the museum of Reggio Calabria, representing the Greek conception of heroism and beauty for their classical composure and dynamic vitality.
Great tourist attractions for both rural and coastal holidays are also the town of Rivello, based on the graceful Basilicata mountains with its typical hystorical houses that can be found in all old parts of most of southern Italy's towns, and the Trulli, typical Apulia houses with cone shaped roofs. Not to mention the delicious cuisine and friendly people, all part of a world waiting to be explored and taken advantage of.

Village Hunting & Site Seeing Holiday

Calabria a land of great opposites, where the clear blue Tyrrhenian sea and it's rugged coast are only few minutes drive away from the fresh mountains and green hill tops.

Visit the picturesque villages, that lay in a relaxing silence on the rocks, like Buonvicino, Grisolia, Maierà, with their small alley-ways, piazzas and strategic points where to admire breathtaking panoramas of the region.

Take a glance at the great sceneries and views, from strategic points like Maratea, that overlooks part of the most beautiful rugged coast of the "Gulf of Policastro"... you'll never  want to leave!

Explore the history and art that towns like Papasidero, Cirella and Diamante have preserved for years and years ... some remains date back to the Palaeolithic period .

All this... and the warm and welcoming ways of life of the southern Italians will make you feel "at home" ... and why not... sit and unwind with them, having a round at "briscola" (southern Italian card game), under the porch of the town bar, watching life go on in a cheery and calm mode.

Visit:

Cirella

Cirella Vecchia

Sits on the rocks just beside the beach.

"Cirella Vecchia", the  historical part hosts the rests of a Church and Castle that still show frescoes of the 15th century and the Mausoleum that is said to date back to the Roman Imperial Period.

Diamante

Diamante Vecchia

Also known as the "Gem of the Mediterranean", enjoys a long promenade facing the clear blue sea and the port. It's historical centre, better known as "Diamante Vecchia", is characteristic for it's small alleyways and hosts over 130 murales painted on the walls of the houses, wooden statues of the 18th century and the Mother church.

Suggested time of visit to Cirella and Diamante: Half a Day

Grisolia & Maierà

Maierà and Grisolia separated by a deep ravine

Two Medieval boroughs that lay silently on the mountains only few hundreds of metres away from each other but dramatically separated by a deep ravine. Maierà's feudal manor is situated at the top of the town and Grisolia's "Madonna delle Grazie" Church, houses rests of the 15th and 18th century.

Buonvicino

Buonvicino

This small village appears almost unexpectedly, between the green mountains and hill tops. It is particular in twisted alleyways that intercept each other and hosts the ancient Mother Church. The town's piazza houses a recently built Gazebo where you can admire a breathtaking view of the high green mountains that cross each other creating a natural frame for the Tyrrhenian that can be spotted in the distance.

Suggested time of visit to Grisolia: Half a Day.

Suggested time of visit to Maierà and Buonvicino: Half a Day

Papasidero

Palaeolithic engravement of the profile of a bull

Lying in a wild and coarse scenery between the mountains thickly overgrown with woods and dotted with rocky peaks, Papasidero hosts a prehistoric site, "Riparo del Romito", destination of many visitors. This site houses the "Grotta del Romito" a grotto that preserves an engravement of the Palaeolithic and many other remains such as animal rests, pieces of crockery and skeletons of that period. Papasidero also hosts a Monastery, and various churches that house frescoes and remains of 14th and 17th centuries

Maratea

Christ of Maratea

This ancient town perched in a strategic position over one of the most beautiful parts of the Gulf of Policastro, overlooks the rugged coast and the clear blue Tyrrhenian. It hosts a 22 metre tall statue of Christ, made out of marble, second only to the one in Rio de Janeiro. Visit the Port, "S.Biagio" Sanctuary and the remains of "old" Maratea.

Suggested time of visit to Papasidero: One Day
